Periodontal disease (or gum disease) ranges from simple gum inflammation (gingivitis) to serious disease (Periodontitis) that results in major damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. In the worst cases, teeth are lost.

Gum disease causes the teeth to become loose and eventually fall out. In fact, it is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Unfortunately gum disease often progresses painlessly so that you do not notice the damage it is doing. Being an irreversible disease, early detection and maintenance is vital to prevent as gum disease from starting.

Dental at Joondalup has the most up to date systems in preventing gum disease including periodontal screening and digital x-rays to look for deposits of plaque and calculus.

Symptoms of Periodontal Disease:

  • Persistent bad breath
  • Red, swollen or inflamed gums
  • Tender or bleeding gums
  • Painful chewing
  • Loose and sensitive teeth
  • Receding gums or teeth that appear longer

Combating periodontal disease

Periodontal disease treatment may involve a deep cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing, in which Dr Chandra removes calculus from both above and below the gum line and smooths rough spots on tooth roots where plaque-causing bacteria tend to gather.

Healthy gums and healthy teeth are a winning combination.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Warning: not everyone may be suitable for this treatment and any oral appliance carries risks of treatment.
